Las Alamedas Restaurant Update
It looks like the landlords won.
The sign in front of Las Alamedas restaurant now says:
28 Great Years
Thank You Houston
We Will Relocate
We've been covering this story on the radio show.
Las Alamedas, the Mexican restaurant on Katy Freeway at Voss Road, closed in January due to landlord problems. A sign on the door said they would re-open on Friday, Feb. 6th. Their voice mail last week said that they were "currently closed, negotiating a new lease."
When I called the restaurant last night, I got a "this line is temporarily disconnected" message.
According to the Houston Business Journal: " ... the original owner of the restaurant died in a plane crash about a year and a half ago and the family is currently fighting over ownership of the restaurant."
Word is that the landlords are trying to increase the rent by 50%.
Las Alamedas has one of the most beautiful locations in town, although you really can't tell from the freeway. The rear of the restaurant overlooks lush foliage, taking you far away from the hustle and bustle of the interstate highway. I can see where the landlords may think they can get more rent revenue for the property. But a 50% increase in rent? That's a bit exorbitant, don't you think?
Las Alamedas opened in 1980 and has been a longtime favorite of Memorial Area Residents.
Now it's gone. Let’s hope the owners don’t pave paradise and put in a parking lot.

I just don't think the food will sell absent the location. As I recall, the cheese enchiladas were around $18? I doubt many people went for the food or to pay exorbitant prices, rather for the ambiance. They probably should have bowed to the extortion. But then again, maybe something better will move in!
