Cupcakery to the Stars - Coming to Houston

Cupcake connoisseurs, get your taste buds ready, the cupcakery to the stars is coming to Houston. You too can eat the same cupcakes as Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Tyra Banks, Tom Cruise and Jake Gyllenhaal
when Sprinkles Cupcakes, The Original Cupcake Bakery, opens in Houston this winter at 4010 Westheimer in Highland Village.

Let's see, we have Sugar Baby's, Crave and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique (they're actually in Katy, TX, but it's a suburb of Houston so we'll count it) and now Sprinkles, the one who started the cupcake craziness in 2005 in Beverly Hills.

Owners Candace and Charles Nelson kicked off the cupcake trend with the opening of their flagship Beverly Hills boutique in April 2005 and have been elbow deep in frosting ever since.

With locations in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach, CA; Dallas, TX; Scottsdale, AZ; and Palo Alto, CA (opening in August), the Nelsons are eager to introduce Houstonians to their beloved cupcakes.

Says Charles, "Houston is a sophisticated market with a flourishing food scene. Many Houstonians have been to our Beverly Hills and Dallas stores and asked for a location of their own."

Candace eschews traditional cake recipes, carefully developing each recipe specifically for the delicate nature of cupcakes. The result is a sophisticated spin on an old-fashioned classic. Or simply put, a moist, delicate cake topped with rich, creamy frosting.

Two of Sprinkles' most popular flavors - red velvet and strawberry were inspired by Charles' Oklahoma roots. Living in California, he longed for the familiar cakes of his childhood. Sprinkles' modern versions conjure up those nostalgic memories for him, albeit with a cosmopolitan twist.

The red velvet cake features pure Belgian cocoa with cream cheese icing. And if you like strawberries, you'll love their cake featuring real pureed strawberries and strawberry buttercream icing. Both are topped with Sprinkles' signature modern dot. See photo.

Something special just for us:
Sprinkles Houston is creating a UT cupcake with an orange longhorn decoration. (Hmm, I wonder what Texas A&M fans will have to say about that!)

It's a nice touch when a chain does that to reach out to the locals. Ra Sushi did something similar when they came to town, creating a "Lonestar" roll.

Similar to other cupcakeries around town, Sprinkles will bake fresh cakes throughout the day in small batches. Their cakes are handcrafted from the finest ingredients and contain no preservatives, trans fats or artificial flavors. Yea.

Since opening as the nation’s first cupcake bakery, Sprinkles has inspired long lines of devoted Hollywood stars and serious epicureans for its freshly baked treats.  Sprinkles sells its cupcake mixes at Williams-Sonoma stores throughout the US and Canada.
