I'm Lovin' the New Iced Coffees at McDonald's & Cranky Cleverley

Have you tried the new iced coffee drinks at McDonald's yet?

I'm enjoying them.

But you have to watch the calories & fat - the regular flavor large (32 ounces) iced coffee has 280 calories and 11 grams of fat. But hey, that IS equal to four 8 ounce cups of coffee.

Yikes, I can't handle four cups of coffee in a day.

But these new iced coffees are so delicious, it's easy to guzzle down the whole thing.

Oh, I suppose I could order a smaller size.

The flavors are caramel, hazelnut, vanilla and regular.
I have not tried them all yet - just the regular and hazelnut.

The price for a 32 ounce at my neighborhood McDonald's was $1.99. That's not bad at all.

I also enjoy the taste of Starbucks, but I REALLY don't enjoy the "happy time" baristas at Starbucks and answering their list of questions when you place an order at the drive-thru window like: "How are you today?" and "Do you want THIS with your order?" and "Do you want THAT with your order?"

No, I just want my coffee, please.

I've even tried saying:
"I'd like a vente coffee, black, please. And that's all."

But they do not listen.

They launch into their barrage of questions that I must answer before I can get my brew.

They don't do that at my McDonald's.
The drive-thru cashier just repeats my order back to me and gives me the total amount due.

There's not a lot of unnecessary patter or questions that require a response when ordering at my McDonald's.

I like that.

And I like their iced coffee.

You would think that, as a radio talk show host, I obviously like to talk and might enjoy conversing at a drive-thru window.

But I don't.

I just want my coffee ... please.

(Oh and kudos to McDonald's for calling it iced coffee instead of ice coffee. That drives me crazy too.)

ponder this: "baristas" at Starbucks are asking you how you are because they are nice OR they are following instruction from corporate who offers decent pay and the worst thing about their job is ... "the PEOPLE who get upset when asked how they are doing?" AND McDonald's employees communicate/work as little as possible because they dislike their job and pay sucks.. by the way... if you don't want to talk to anyone then make your own coffee..

      Dear Anonymous Emailer,
My, my. Aren't we cranky today?

Thank you for your comments and thank you for reading my blog.
      I appreciate that.

While I do make a FABULOUS cup of coffee at home,
sometimes I enjoy having a cup while I'm in the car.
      And that's when I visit the drive-thrus.

You know, it's not so much about the "How are you today."

It's really more about the laundry list of other questions recited by the
baristas that I must answer before I get my one cup of black coffee.

And this is after I conclude my order with: "And that's all."

Now, to address your other comments about me in your email,
(which I will not inflict upon my kind blog readers) I responded to the
email address you provided but it turned out to be a non-existent emailbox.
      What a surprise!

Why don't you tell me who you really are and we can have an intelligent
conversation about your comments and I will enlighten you.

Surely a "rockstar" has the cojones to speak vis-à-vis.
N'est pas, my precious little pumpkin?

Cleverley - just found your blog because I happened to be at Uptown Park this morning for a cup of joe and saw the Crave Cupcake store. I went to work after getting said coffee and googled the name of the Crave Cupcake store to see what I could find out about it and ended up finding a link to your blog (because you wrote about the store).

First of all - ROCK ON, I loved your response to the previous comment. I read it because of the "Cranky Cleverley" title on the sidebar.

You see, I was curious about that title as I found it hard to believe that you would be cranky cause the Cleverley I knew was not a cranky kind of person. Yep, I sorta kinda know you (or not, as the case may be).

    :)

You wrote an wonderful article about me and my (ex) husband when we got married years ago - we had met you when you were doing all the wedding seminars.

So ... love your current blog. I have saved it to my favorites so that I can check on what's happening in the culinary world in Houston, and I look forward to reading more of your takes on what's happening.

    It's nice to rediscover you.

      Hey Jolene!

It's great to hear from you.
Thanks so much for reaching out to me.

For my blog readers, the backstory is that I ran the wedding department for The Houston Post newspaper and also wrote a Sunday column for the paper called "Down the Aisle." I remember the story I wrote about you.
That was a fun time. The Post closed in 1995, so it HAS been awhile since we've seen each other.

You may not remember me as cranky back then, but I guess I've gotten a wee bit cantankerous over the past 13 years ... !

Thanks so much for reading (and liking) my blog. For more info about Houston's restaurant scene, you can also catch me on the radio, Saturdays at Noon on CNN 650 Radio News and on Friday mornings on Fox 26 TV, here in Houston. View some of my segments here.

I disseminate a lot of restaurant news in those two vehicles and not all the news makes it into my blog.
There's just not enough time in the day to post it all.

Thanks again for writing and I look forward to your comments in the future.
      Best,
      Cleverley
